Meetings with local actors – Changing temperatures and its impact on agriculture in the Korça region

During the meetings with local actors in the region of Korça, it was emphasized that the change in temperatures has significantly affected the agriculture of the area. This has brought challenges that affect not only the production, but also the quality of the harvest. Some of these challenges include:

  1. Periods of Drought: Changing temperatures have led to prolonged periods of drought, reducing the amount of water available for irrigation. This situation has negatively affected the yield of crops and the production of fruits, vegetables and wheat.
  2. Increase in Average Temperatures: The increase in average temperatures has changed the growth cycles of plants. This can cause premature flowering or delay in crop maturity, affecting the quality and quantity of agricultural products.
  3. Extension of the Growing Season: In some cases, increased temperatures have extended the growing season for some crops, enabling two crops to be planted per year. However, this advantage may be neutralized by increased drought and changes in rainfall patterns.
  4. Diseases and Parasites: Warmer temperatures and wetter conditions have favoured the spread of diseases and parasites that damage crops. This has increased the need for the use of pesticides, increasing production costs and negative impacts on the environment.

Necessary Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation

To address these challenges, it is necessary for farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector to adopt sustainable practices. These include investments in research to adapt crops to new climate conditions, as well as the development of drought and disease management methods.

If the necessary actions are not taken quickly, the impact of climate change may continue to damage agriculture in the Korça region, thus jeopardizing community well-being and food security in the area.
